The 1.6 tdci is different to both the 1.8 and the 2.0 (not sure what your mondeo has/had but both the 1.8 nd 2.0 are different to each other as well as the 1.6). The 1.6 has a harmonic balancer but unlike V engines it is simply a weighted flywheel which I guess could be faulty.

I've decided to give up lurking and start posting as I have a bit of an issue with my Focus 1.6 TDCI. 109. The car is a 08 plate, one of the few facelifts on the 08 plate. The engine has done around 170k and been with me for six years. The engine has had a replacement turbo prior to my ownership along with the new type feed pipe.

In the 3 months since we've had out Focus TDCi, we've had an "engine malfunction" warning appear on the dash 6 times, always when doing 60mph+. The car loses power, but pulling over, turning off the engine and restarting seems to fix it (temporarily). The first time we called out the AA, but they said their computer couldn't find a fault.
